As Wise As an Owl

Deep in the quiet green woods, where a clear stream moved gently over smooth stones, there lived a great white owl with wide golden eyes. She watched the forest from a tall branch, seeing far more than most creatures ever noticed. The animals of the woodland spoke often and loudly, yet the owl remained mostly silent, listening and observing the world around her.

Tucked safely against her soft feathers were her young owls, small and curious, learning the ways of the forest. They watched their mother closely, noticing how she spoke only when it truly mattered. While the fox argued, the magpies gossiped, and the squirrels chattered endlessly among the trees, the owl kept her thoughts quietly to herself.

One calm evening, as the light faded gently through the leaves, one of the young owls lifted its head and asked a question. “Mother, why do you not say everything you think? The other animals talk all the time.”

The old owl blinked slowly and looked out across the peaceful forest. The stream whispered below, and the air was still.

“My child,” she said softly, “thoughts are powerful things. If we release every thought that enters our minds, we can easily create confusion, hurt feelings, and needless trouble. Wisdom is not found in speaking often, but in knowing when words are truly needed.”

The young owls listened carefully, their bright eyes wide with understanding.

“Generations before us have learned this lesson,” the old owl continued. “Be as wise as an owl. Keep your own thoughts to yourself, unless those thoughts will help someone, guide someone, or bring kindness into the world.”

From that night on, the young owls remembered their mother’s words. As they grew and watched the forest from their branches, they learned that silence can hold great strength, and that thoughtful words carry far more weight than careless ones.

And so, in the quiet woodland, the owls remained watchers of the world, speaking only when their words could truly help another creature find its way.

Keep your own thoughts to yourself, unless those thoughts will help someone, guide someone, or bring kindness into the world. Powerful advice.
