I Built a GPT Store Side Project and Realized the Agent Didn’t Need Me Anymore
The night my “little” GPT side project quietly proved it could make money, answer support, and improve itself without asking my permission

A side project in the GPT Store was supposed to give me leverage.
Instead, it gave me a weird identity crisis.
I built what I thought was a simple AI agent, and somewhere between shipping version one and refreshing analytics at 2:17 a.m., I realized something I wasn’t ready for:
The agent didn’t really need me anymore.

The power wasn’t in the GPT Store listing, or the clever prompt engineering.
It was in the fact that I had eaten enough dirt in my career to know where people usually fall down.
The model handled the language.

When it leads someone to a big decision, who feels responsible?
The GPT can generate content, patterns, and paths.
You decide which ones are worth walking.
The question I still don’t have a neat answer to
I wish I could end with a clean bow:
“Here’s the 5-step framework to thrive alongside AI” or “Here’s why you’ll always be safe.”
But that would be a lie.
The truth is messier:
Yes, AI agents will do more of the work we built our identities around.
Yes, it will sting to watch them handle tasks we once saw as our edge.
Yes, some jobs will shrink or vanish, and some of us will have to reinvent ourselves more than once.
But also:
The world is still full of people who are scared, stuck, tired, and ashamed of asking for help.
Tools, no matter how smart, don’t carry that weight. People do.
Somewhere in that gap—between what the GPT can say and what a human can mean—there’s still work worth doing.
My GPT Store side project taught me something I didn’t expect to learn from a “toy”:
I am not essential to the operation of the product.
But I am essential to its intention.
The agent doesn’t need me to keep going.
But if I walk away completely, it becomes just another clever pattern machine, drifting toward whatever the loudest users and easiest metrics pull it toward.
So I stay.
Not to control every answer, but to quietly, stubbornly hold the line on what this thing is for.
