A Woman Poses As A Social Worker Before Snatching A Newborn Baby
A disturbing tale of deception...

On 4th August 1989, a young woman named Kisha Birts gave birth to her first child at her mother’s home — a son she named Emmanuel.

For the next seven days, Emmanuel remained at Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he underwent routine health checks before being discharged on 11th August.
With Emmanuel finally home, the small family seemed complete. The newborn boy was a welcome addition, and Kisha was eager to settle into life with her son.
But the very next day, an event would occur that would change the course of Emmanuel’s life — and his family’s — forever.

On that day, there was a knock at the front door. A woman stood outside, identifying herself as a social worker making a follow-up visit to check on Emmanuel.
She introduced herself to Kisha and her mother as Debra Manning. During the visit, Debra was able to accurately relay details about Emmanuel’s health, including the fact that he had an eye infection.
After completing the check-up, Debra left the home, arranging to return for another visit the following month.

On 12th September, Debra returned to the home — this time with troubling news. She told Kisha that Emmanuel had tested positive for HIV. The diagnosis was considered possible, as Kisha had used drugs during her pregnancy.
Kisha was understandably devastated by the news and overwhelmed with guilt.
Her distress only deepened the following day when the social worker returned again, this time carrying a letter from Child Welfare. The letter ordered that Emmanuel be taken back to the hospital for further testing.
Debra told Kisha that Emmanuel needed to be taken to the hospital immediately. Kisha asked to accompany them, but she was told that this was not permitted and that she would have to remain at home.
At around 10am, Kisha watched as the social worker carried her baby out of the house.
It would be the last time she ever saw her son.

Debra had assured Kisha that Emmanuel wouldn’t be gone for long, promising that he would be back home by 2pm. But as the afternoon passed, there was still no sign of them.
With each passing hour, it became increasingly clear that something was wrong. By 8pm that evening, Kisha called the police to report that her son was missing.

In the days that followed, an investigation was launched. Kisha’s mother did know of a social worker named Debra Manning, but when police tracked her down, it quickly became clear that she was not the woman who had taken Emmanuel.
The horrifying reality soon began to emerge. The woman who had come to the house had never been a social worker at all. Instead, she had posed as one in order to abduct Emmanuel. The name she had given was likely an alias, and authorities believed she may have unlawfully obtained the baby’s medical information to gain Kisha’s trust.
When law enforcement contacted Child Services, officials confirmed that they had never authorised the removal of Emmanuel from his home. They also stated that the woman who had taken him had never worked for their organisation.

Emmanuel’s abductor was described as an African-American woman. At the time of the kidnapping, she was believed to be in her 30s and stood at around 5'6". She had sandy brown hair, which investigators believe may have been a wig.
Witnesses noted that she wore heavy blue eyeshadow and spoke with an African accent. On each visit to the home, she dressed in a white lab coat and surgical pants — clothing that investigators later noted would not typically be worn by a legitimate social worker.
In the aftermath of Emmanuel’s disappearance, both of his parents were tested for HIV and received negative results, ruling out the possibility that Emmanuel had contracted the virus. Both parents also passed polygraph examinations and were ruled out as suspects in their son’s abduction.
Emmanuel Birts has now been missing for more than three decades. The woman who identified herself as “Debra Manning” has never been traced, and there has been no confirmed sighting of either her or Emmanuel since the day he was taken from his home in 1989.
If he is still alive today, Emmanuel would be around 36 years old. Below is an age-progression image showing what he may look like today.
