The Gap Widens

A poem

The gap widens

and for a moment,

love is primal and intense.

-

The gap widens,

and passion dries up,

moving 200 miles away,

left alone in outer space.

-

The gap widens,

you look in from outside tall windows

feeling distanced, cold and alone.

It all seemed so simple before

when the walls would talk of sweat

and quiet joys.

-

The gap widens,

you write off another possibility,

another life that could have been yours

and the images of it that you had created.

A future house, the anticipated messiness

the plasters that you’d used

to cover over problems.

-

The gap widens,

and you’ve never felt so alone

watching as the end you always expected

draws closer now,

closer.

-

The gap widens,

and you fall to the black abyss

arms reaching for help

but refusing it when offered

pure spite.
