The Holy Grail

A villanelle about the greatest prize in sports

By Clyde E. DawkinsPublished about 10 hours ago 1 min read

In ice-bound dreams, the Cup does call,

A trophy's lure, for teams to stand tall.

The quest for Lord Stanley's prize does enthrall.

Players sweat, their skills on full display's fall,

Champions are made, through trials of will.

In ice-bound dreams, the Cup does call.

From Montreal to Denver, the journey's grall,

Through triumph and heartbreak, the road does wind still.

The quest for Lord Stanley's prize does enthrall.

The names etched on it, a story to recall,

A legacy forged, in ice and fire's chill.

In ice-bound dreams, the Cup does call.

The Cup's dark history, a tale to appall,

Of riots and death, a shadow does linger and fill.

The quest for Lord Stanley's prize does enthrall.

But still they chase, through trials to enthrall,

The Stanley Cup, a dream that never will fall.

In ice-bound dreams, the Cup does call,

The quest for Lord Stanley's prize does enthrall.
