How Niching Down F’d Up My Writing

And Why I Regret It

The very first thing you learn about writing online, whether for your blog or Medium, is that you need to figure out your niche. Some go about and say that there is no success if you’re not niched down.

If you don’t know what the niche is, the simple answer would be: something you can write about that is both your passion and that you have (wast) knowledge and experience in.

So when you start a blog, you should have a topic (niche) in mind that you will create content about. The same goes with Medium. Or any other content creation platform.

There are two explanations I stumbled upon regarding this topic: you can’t monetize your work without being niched down and you can’t focus on more than one topic.

Both are total BS — in my opinion.

Why do I have a problem with niching down?

When I started my blog I wanted to write about several topics: productivity, traveling, and blogging. I didn’t want to hustle more than I needed with three separate blogs so I created one blog — a library of random stuff I’m interested in and passionate about.

When it comes to niche, I can only categorize it as a lifestyle blog. In the meantime, I’ve added two more topics: self-care and side hustling.

I didn’t like the idea of niching down from the start of my blogging journey as it would limit my interests and constrain my creativity.

Unlike popular (blogging) beliefs, I can focus on several different topics and I am interested in many topics and things. So, how could I niche down and have success in only one topic, when there are several more I have knowledge and experience in?

The truth is, some months I’ll write blog posts about only one topic, and in other months I’ll write about more than one. It all depends on my creative juices and inspiration.

What I did wrong with Medium?

When I started writing on Medium, I wrote about many different topics. I even wrote some poems.

Then after several months of not writing anything, I published several stories about Etsy and how to successfully sell your digital products on the platform. Also, there have been some blogging stories as well.

There is some success with those stories, and people are reading them. The problem is, I’m now ready to move on to other topics and share my thoughts and opinions.

I have so many other stories sitting in my drafts waiting for me to hit publish, but I’m stalling. I’m afraid that I niched down and that I may lose followers and subscribers if I start sharing other topics.

I know I can create one more Medium profile and share stories there, but I really don’t want to overcomplicate my life unnecessarily.

I F’d up my enjoyment on this platform by focusing only on one topic when the truth is I’m a multi-passionate creator and niching down simply isn’t for me.

What are your thoughts on niching down? Does it work for you?
