social media
The tech industry makes the social media world go 'round; explore the technologies that keep us all connected.
Will Social Media be the End of Us?
I grew up in what adults refer to as “the privileged generation,” “the technology generation,” or more specificized as “Generation Z.” We are the generation that started social media. There is no denying it in any way. Social media is any website or application that enables users to interact with each other. Ways of interaction include pictures, videos, texting, and calling. Through these interactions, users are able to become closer and get to know each other better. Social media is accessible almost anywhere in the world through technology and its massive advancement. This means that people from teenagers, young adults, and moreover to older adults are all able to use social media. Those at a very young age have also started using social media. Those users have been using websites and applications like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and many other networking sites. These sites allow for quick and easy interaction with just about anyone, from family members to even complete strangers. A 2016 study by Pew Research Center found that 69% of Americans use some type of social media, compared to 5% in 2005 (Greenwood, 2016). Social media has changed society’s ways of sharing information and communicating with others. Though social media has led to positive changes in interaction, it also has its downsides.

Facebook Deliberately Addictive? No Kidding
The number of apparent Facebook users is now the size of a few countries put together, and roughly almost a third of the global population. Former Facebook president Sean Parker's recent statement that Facebook creators were "exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology” is, as a result, hardly revelatory.

How Internet Killed the Mass Media. Top Story - October 2017.
Humans are social creatures. We are naturally predisposed to interact and empathize one with the other, and the ways we communicate are sophisticated and made perfect by centuries of practice. Over time, we have developed an increasing number of channels and technologies to boost the strength and reach of our messages, from signal fires and passenger pigeons to radio, television, and ultimately the Internet.

Social Media Moods and Market Movements. Top Story - October 2017.
In 2013, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) confirmed that companies could announce "key information in compliance with Regulation Fair Disclosure (Regulation FD)" on social media platforms, provided they alert investors as to which social media platform they will use to broadcast such information. The SEC announcement came after an investigation by the Division of Enforcement for a post by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. On his personal Facebook page, Hastings had mentioned that, monthly, Netflix had more than one billion hours of streaming video. Since the information was neither mentioned in the press release nor in Form 8-K filing, the stocks reacted sharply to the Facebook post.

Building Duologue
“There should be an app for that,” I said. “We should build it!” So we did. “It” is Duologue, a chatbot for Facebook Messenger that rescues you from uncomfortable silences. Visit the page, start chatting with it, and it will offer you some options for continuing the conversation when it looks like the well has run dry. Much like the bottom of my pint glass on the evening we decided to build Duologue.
