A Clockwork Memoir. Top Story - July 2022.
1. In 1981, Limeridge Mall opened in my hometown not too far from my aunt’s house. There was a Cineplex that played the big films of the day (Porky’s, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc.) and my family took me to see Disney’s cartoon version of Robin Hood. I was eight years old and what I remember most about the day was the walk down the ramp to the theatres. There were separate lanes marked off with bars and on the right-hand side were the posters for each film. That was when I was struck by a huge white poster with a triangle framing the face of Alex, an eyeball and what seemed to be a naked statue of a fertility goddess.

Morning Song
I remember the day I came across the poem, "On the Pulse of the Morning" written by Maya Angelou. I discovered it when I had been doing some research on patriotism for a speech that I was writing for a Toastmasters'Competition. I had come across an article talking about her and this poem. After reading the entire article I searched for the poem. Her poem became the framework for my speech. Shortly after returning to college to finish my degree, I enrolled in an English composition course and was exposed to another of her poems: "Still I Rise". This time, it was introduced by the professor during the lecture, as we watched Maya Angelou perform this piece. I was captivated.

Stranger Things Day!
Season 4 of Stranger things was an absolute masterpiece. I was on the edge of my seat in horror as well as in tears for those we lost and the struggles this friend group has continued to endure. All the while, holding steadfast to each other and what they have appears to be the lost art of a true blue friendship. After the departure from my binge trance. I felt saddened by something other than their struggles but by something I fear has been lost over the years.

I was represented in (nearly) every show I watched growing up,
What do Cinderella, Elle Woods, Luna Lovegood, Quinn Fabray, Cassie Howard and Sophie Whitehouse all have in common? They are all blonde white European female blonde characters. I’ve just picked six characters that I grew up with across film and tv. I assume that you will struggle to think of a show or movie made in the western world without a white European blonde female character as either the lead or supporting role – I mean, they do have them in Disney films like Aladdin and Mulan, but they aren’t widespread. I know most of these shows are American, but the American/British film and tv industry overlaps and people in both countries should be represented. In the UK, there is a solid connection to India – this is why a show like Bridgerton is groundbreaking, and this is why a show like Skins and Bend in Like Beckham did so well back in the day. They managed to connect to people who aren’t represented in the media even though they make up a large part of our population.
