India’s Biggest Bank Fraud: Vijay Mallya

Vijay Mallya

An Indian man who was once called the “King of Good Times” in his era lived a life like a king. He would throw parties worth millions of rupees in a single night. While billionaires around the world owned private jets, he even had his own Boeing 727.

But today, his name is associated with one of the biggest fraud cases in Indian history.

Yes, we are talking about Vijay Mallya.

“Kingfisher” was the name that made him the owner of everything an ordinary person could only dream of. But in the end, what happened that this very name completely destroyed him?

Welcome once again to story.

Vijay Mallya was born in 1955 into a wealthy family. From childhood, he saw nothing but money in his life. His father, Vittal Mallya, had no shortage of wealth because he controlled a large part of India’s liquor industry. He was the director and biggest shareholder of United Breweries.

Because of his business nature, many people in the country did not view him positively. He stayed away from the media, and it was often said that he would stop negative news from appearing by paying money beforehand.

Vijay Mallya was his only son. From childhood, he lived a royal lifestyle. However, his hobbies were quite unique. He loved cars. At a time when children in India played with spinning tops and marbles, Vijay played with remote-controlled cars.

His father never tried to discipline him strictly, and the result was that when Vijay grew up, his hobbies grew bigger as well. Instead of toy cars, he became obsessed with real ones. He owned around 250 vintage cars and kept more than 200 horses purely as a hobby.

His father didn’t like these habits. He believed someone with such extravagant hobbies could never become a good businessman. But Vijay loved living like a king.

In 1982, Vijay Mallya won the Indian Grand Prix award and became a national champion. He might have taken this passion even further, but then something happened that changed his life forever.

His father suddenly died of a heart attack. Vijay was only 28 years old at the time. The shock changed his life. At an age when he wanted to live carefree, the responsibility of his father’s business empire fell on his shoulders.

Many close people believed that because Vijay was used to a luxurious lifestyle, he would not be able to manage such a big empire. But Vijay proved them wrong.

Among all the products of United Breweries, the brand that attracted him the most was Kingfisher Beer. Just a few years before his father’s death, Vijay himself had launched it.

Being young, he understood that if Kingfisher had to succeed in the market, it needed to target young people.

Bangalore was the first Indian city where the pub culture started growing, and that was the secret of Kingfisher’s success. Vijay introduced Kingfisher to young people in different ways. Pubs created attractive environments, especially for women, and the trend quickly became popular.

Young people would stay in pubs until 4 AM. Bangalore once had only one pub, but within five years it had more than 40 pubs, and Kingfisher benefited directly from this growth.

Soon, Kingfisher became a brand. People no longer asked for beer—they asked specifically for Kingfisher.

Some Indian politicians criticized this Western drinking culture, but Vijay didn’t care. He only wanted to prove that he had taken United Breweries to new heights.

And he did. The company became the largest liquor manufacturer in India. It was said that one out of every two beer bottles sold in India was Kingfisher.
