The Second World War
The Nazi Germany-Soviet Union agreement allowed the Soviet Union to pursue its interests in Poland and Finland, despite ideological differences. However, doubts persisted regarding the durability of this cooperation. Nevertheless, Hitler defied expectations and ordered the invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. This action prompted Britain and France to issue an ultimatum to Germany, demanding the withdrawal of troops or face war. When Germany rejected the ultimatum, Britain declared war on September 3. Although some German generals had warned against engaging in a large-scale European conflict, Germany employed blitzkrieg tactics, utilizing tanks and aircraft to swiftly conquer strategic areas. The Polish army was ill-prepared to counter this new style of warfare, leading to their defeat within a month. Germany occupied western Poland, while the Soviet Union invaded the eastern part as agreed upon with von Ribbentrop.

A Wall Street Alternative
The blood rolled down my arm as I nursed my finger. This was not the first time I had hurt myself with my own hand hammer. I walked over to the doctor’s office to have it sewn up. Doc had his back to the door when I came in. He turned around and smiled. “Again Joshua?” He asked. “Ya doc, this is a good one”. It took eight stitches to close the wound and after thanking doc, I walked back to my blacksmith shop. This order for the Daltons hoe must be done this afternoon. I also have three horses to be shod tomorrow. “Well, better busy than no work at all”, I thought out loud. Some of the farmers had lost their crops to bad weather on the outside of Black River Falls. Such is life in Wisconsin in 1848.

A Dangerous Element
Evelyn tucked her black, chin length hair behind her ears as she concentrated on the task before her: painting the numbers on a clock face with luminous radium based paint. The allure of the pale green glowing substance, advertised as a miracle cure-all was somewhat lost on her. She never cared much for fads. She did try some radium infused toothpaste just to see what all the fuss was about, but it seemed to her that it was not much different than regular toothpaste. Putting that aside, this job was the most coveted, highest paying job a young woman of her status could get and Evelyn was driven to succeed.
