But Can A.I. Do This?. Top Story - August 2023.
Artificial Intelligence is a hot topic. For industries it’s an asset that can get the job done faster and cheaper than any human can. For the workforce, it is a threat to our jobs, of course. Back when A.I. was only science fiction, we believed machines would take care of the dangerous, difficult, tedious and mundane jobs so that humanity could relax and spend more time creating. Sadly, this is not the case. A.I. has an increasing presence in the arts and entertainment industries while us humans continue to toil.

Reindeer Brains. Top Story - July 2023.
Our friends Malinda and Jon recently got back from a visit to Denmark. We’ve never traveled abroad, so I was naturally excited to hear their stories and live vicariously. We learned about Danish museums, Danish landmarks, and how cycling is the main mode of travel in Copenhagen. All of that is lovely, of course, but what about the FOOOOOD?

As we all know, the past has not been particularly kind to women, people of color, members of LGBTQ+ community, or individuals with disabilities. We are still seeing constant threats to the progress we’ve made towards equality. I’m sure every woman and minority who approaches this Vocal challenge has considered this.

My Favorite Memoirs. Top Story - July 2023.
*The books discussed in this list contain themes of abuse* Let me first admit that I am a slow reader. I read my share of Vocal content, but books are a different story. I admire my fellow vocalites, like L.C. Shafer and Heather Hubler, who are prolific readers as well as writers. For me, it is difficult to find books that I can dig into and stick with to the end. I may have undiagnosed ADHD. My mind just wanders in the middle of the page sometimes.

A Dangerous Element
Evelyn tucked her black, chin length hair behind her ears as she concentrated on the task before her: painting the numbers on a clock face with luminous radium based paint. The allure of the pale green glowing substance, advertised as a miracle cure-all was somewhat lost on her. She never cared much for fads. She did try some radium infused toothpaste just to see what all the fuss was about, but it seemed to her that it was not much different than regular toothpaste. Putting that aside, this job was the most coveted, highest paying job a young woman of her status could get and Evelyn was driven to succeed.

“Forty jumping jacks, here we go!” “ONE, MA’AM” “TWO, MA’AM” “THREE, MA’AM” Uh oh. I think I’ve pissed myself…No, I’m sure I’ve pissed myself. It’s just a little drop, but if I don’t get to the bathroom now, we’re going to have a real problem. Thankfully, I’m in the back row, so I can sneak off to the facilities as discreetly as possible.
