Monster in the Woods
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. A mischievous cacophony of laughter could also be heard, if one were close enough and young enough, to pick up on the high octave tones emitted from inside. A night of mayhem was officially underway.

WICKED INFERNO
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The candescent light could be seen far above the canopy of trees, almost as bright as the moon above the night sky. This included the town’s romantic hookup place for the young, old, and the recently divorced.

Sweet Rot
Sweet Rot By Benjamin Boyd The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Its’ glow was the only sign of life among the still trees. The dim light gave an otherworldly aura to the slow passing fog as it drifted by the cabin’s window. Its’ dark frame molding into the forest. With the figures of trees frozen in blackness. Their branches were jagged hands darting out for anything that walked past. The only other light was the faint gray of moonlight scatter among the shadows. The stillness of the forest amplified any movement. Each twig snap was growing closer than the last. It was like a ghost from a forgotten time. The sudden life in the long rotting cabin would be a reason to run, but for Gabriel it was just what he was hoping to find. He would soon wish he had run.

North Mountain Creature
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years but one night, a candle burned in the window. The forest ranger feverously tried to wrap gauze around her bleeding arm by candlelight. She shook so badly she couldn't hold the scissors to cut the gauze.

Host
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Strange, I thought. I had hiked past this dilapidated cabin on the Appalachian Trail many times and had never seen signs of life there. The cracked shutters screamed stay out while the warm light invited me in. I tugged the brim of my hood to ward off the rain pelting mercilessly through the canopy. The falling autumn leaves had taken my breath away during the day, but during a night deluge they provided no protection. My feet ached in my soaked boots, and my joints hurt. I liked the hurt after a good day’s hike. I hated this older, bone-tired feeling. Aging was the worst. Well, perhaps second worst to starving while alone in a rainstorm.

The Fruiting Body
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. When John Wilson spotted the tiny dancing flame from his own window, the sight punched him in the gut. The bowl he had been washing slipped out of his hands, and shattered on the shabby linoleum tile. John barely noticed. His eyes were fixed to that cold flare that pierced through the darkness, and into his brain. His mouth fell slack and a thin line of drool spilled from his bottom lip.

Beyond The Garden Wall
“The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window.” Lyial Graymont ran forward through the empty fountain in the center of the Graymont Estate garden. Gardeners had emptied the fountain days before to avoid any damage that could come from the icy climate of the fast-approaching winter. Lyial was a young boy in his early teens and quite short for his age. He wore his signature flat cap and matching brown vest with pride. He looked out across the sea of vibrant red, yellow, and violet garden flowers with a twinkle of adventure in his twilight blue eyes. “That’s how the story always starts. They always know how it starts, but the ending always changes Prin! We have to learn the truth about the cabin. No good story ends differently each time it’s told.”

Bulbous Eyes
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Emily dumped crushed up beer cans into a garbage bag as she tidied up. Everyone else was asleep, the smell of smoke and liquor hanging in the air of the old cabin like drunken wishes and empty promises.
